Default Catalytic Converter help!

Hi,

I have a 1999 626 lx (or es, not sure, but its the Inline 4-cyl version) and the caty. converter is going bad and causes the engine light to go on. In AZ this wasnt an issue b/c they dont test for emissions that often, but I recently moved to boston and have a decision to make. I cant pass emissions here b/c you cant pass with any system failing (causing an engine light) so i have 60 days to either repair and pass or get a new car. Every car place i've called has quoted me about 1400$ to put on a new cat. b/c its cali emissions, not a regular. Any ideas?? I dont REALLY want to get a new car yet b/c this thing still runs great... but I dont want to put 1400$ into a car that is only worth 4k since i'm looking to get a 2009 Mazda3 once they come out.

Thanks!

Ok, so I think i figured out a work around. In MA, you can still pass emissions with up to 2 systems not "checked in" on your cars computer. Therefore if I get an OBDII reader and use it to reset the cat. code... I should be able to pass??

My question is, do the OBDII readers reset only the one system or do they reset the entire computer?

Hey Man..........You're in luck !!!!
I bought my Son a "winter-beater" 2000 626 and the cat. also went bad.
I called Lou's Custom Exhaust in No. Reading Mass. and told him the
situation. Since I work for the military here in Mass. he gave me a great
deal, I think it was around $500.00 installed !!!!!!!!!

If you mention you knew a happy customer from Hanscom Air Force Base,
he'll probably treat you well also...He's a real good guy...
978-664-6114.

He did have to order it, but it came in within a day or so.....

Good Luck,
Mark
