Default New here, considering a protege, need advice please!

Hey All,
New to forums as I own a 2011 optima but am looking to get a cheap beater with a manual, as my Kia is auto.

I'm looking at a 2003 mazdaspeed protege. I can get it for 7000..

But it has 122xxx miles.
My question is, how reliable are the speed protégés?
Is this car gonna last me 40,000 more miles without needing major fixes?
Is it worth the buy? I want it to last —at least 2 years.

Any input would be much appreciated.
I know the car itself is great and a worthy sports beater, but I can't afford it if it's gonna be a constant repair.
