I just bought a 1996 Mazda Protege. Two days after I bought it the Check engine light came on. Took it to auto zone and got the following codes - P1179, P0400, and P0170. Does anyone know what I need to do to fix this or what these codes mean. Also, the car now produces a cloud of white smoke, but only when first started in the morning, the rest of the time its fine. Help please, I can't have this thing break down. Thank you.

 

Here is what they decode too:

P1179 Long Term Fuel Trim Too Rich - Banks 1 and 2

P0400 Exhaust Gas Recirculation "A" Flow

P0170 Fuel Trim Bank 1

Since there is only one bank on an inline 4 cylinder don’t let that confuse you. The long term is just a symptom of the P0170. I would start with the EGR valve. Clean or replace, sometimes they can be cleaned, sometime they just need replaced.

Alot of issue with the egr valve isn't it, but the sensor. Clean it, and go from there.
