check engine light on 2000 protege 1.6
Hey, tryin to get the car smogged CA!!!!!! BS
Has codes po420/ po421 the shop says it's the front cat, along w/ the rear 02 sensor... The problem isi can't find a pre-cat anywhere other than MAZDA $700...
I was reading that there's some kind of exemption on the magnaflow website??? Anyone know about this????
The MAZDA parts are $1,000& cars not worth much more than that
233,000 trouble-free miles!!!! (other than this of course)

at your mileage i wouldnt be suprised if your car was on the 3rd replacement converter. so yes, replace the converter. but im not so sure about the rear O2 sensor (to confirm converter failure, the tech should be compairing inversions between the front and rear O2 sensors)
your car has a lot of miles, i would ask them to replace the converter first. then recheck the rear O2 sensor operation.
JMO
not familiar with CA waiver exemptions, but consider the cost of the new converter as compaired to monthly car payments..

this is why im glad where i live there are no emmision laws we just gutted the cat out because the mechanic shop wanted 1000$ for a new one and i said for that much i can drop a racing exhaust system in it without the cat so thats what i did and that was only about 400$
