Default Cheap OBDII reader for 1997 Mazda Protege

Can anyone recommend a cheap (under $30) OBDII reader that actually works with 1997 Mazda Protégé? I just bought a generic ELM327 Bluetooth one on ebay, but it won't connect to my car's ECU.

Autozone has no problem reading codes off my car, but I don't want to pay over $100 for an OBDII reader.

Thanks for any suggestions (model numbers would be appreciated).

i own a 2000 protege an i have the ELM327 bluetooth with the Torque app works perfect. Try and download the free version of the torque app and try and connect the ELM327 bluetooth to it. I have the paid version of the torque app it is awesome stuff.
