Default Camshaft Sensor

I got a check engine light the other day after running into some heavy puddles. Code PO340 Camshaft Position Sensor A-Bank Circuit Malfunction. This is a 96 Protege 1.5L, Manual. The engine is misfiring quite a bit.

I checked and blow dried the distributor cap along with the plugs.

Im guessing the sensor is in the distributor, after looking around, but there is only one plug that plugs into the distributor. Does the coil for the distributor share the same wires/plug as the Cam Sensor for this car? I'm going to try to take the rotor out from the distributor so I can get a look at the sensor. Any advice? Is there a place where I can get a manual on changing the cam sensor?

Newbie here, so any advice would be great, thanks!

Fig. 2: To test the camshaft position sensor, remove the distributor, connect a scan tool then rotate the distributor drive by hand
Remove the distributor from the engine.
Detach the 3-wire connector from the distributor.
Enable the scan tool to record the camshaft position sensor output.
Rotate the distributor drive by hand and verify that there were four 5 volt pulses within one revolution of the distributor drive.
If not as specified, replace the distributor assembly.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

The camshaft position sensor is an integral part of the distributor and not serviceable. The entire distributor assembly must be replaced. Refer to for procedures involving the distributor.

Thanks for the reply. So the a Camshaft sensor that is located inside a distributor cannot be replaced?

I will get it tested, where would I go from there if the test come out positive? Thanks

It is not serviceable but there is another possibility. If the timing belt has jumped a tooth it will set a cam sensor code also. You will have to find a shop with a scan tool to test the cam sensor or get creative with a volt meter.

Default How to use the scan tool

How would I use a scan tool on this? or even a voltage meter? There is only one plug going into this distributor and it is a 7 pin/wire. Where would I plug in the scan tool? Thanks for all your help so far
