Default camshaft position sensor

I have a 1996 Mazda B4000 cab plus pick-up with a 4 liter and 4wd. I was driving down the road one day and the check engine light came on. I hooked up a scan tool to see what the problem was and it turned out to be the camshaft position sensor. I also noticed that the temp gauge started reading wrong at the same time my check engine light came on. I replaced the temp sending unit and checked the gauge and it still reads a lower temp than it did before the check engine light. The gauge moves but, just doesn't read right and the check engine light says only the camshaft position sensor. I believe these two things have something in common but, I can't find what it is. Any help with this problem will be greatly appreciated.
