Default 97 Protege Check Engine Light

1997 Protege LX. 1.5L I just bought this car with the Check Engine light on. I am usually a saab person and this usually means an oxygen sensor. I HAVE searched the forums and don't see a good answer. The car runs fine. Is this something major, or can it be ignored. I do not have to worry about emissions testing where I live. Thanks.

You can get the code read free at most discount auto parts stores, like AutoZone or Advance. I had the same issue on my '96 Protege and it turned out to be the EGR valve (which controls emissions recirculation,) which I hear is a common problem with these cars. Expensive to get replaced, but cheap to clean, which I hear often solves the problem. I am about to try that myself.
