RE: '97 Protege with "Catalytic Efficiency" Code
Thanks, this is all reat information. How difficult is it to change out the radiator on this '97? I've only changed out one radiator in my life and it was on a '76 Chevy Pickup about 20 years ago !! Also, can you give me and Idea of the location of the Thermostat? I know I can handle that if I know where it is on this car. I've never done one, but from what I hear it is very simple??

Also, after reading through some of the other messages yesterday, I checked the cooling fans to make sure that they were kicking on and they are. So, which would you suggest first.....the thermostat or the radiator since I am on very limited funds right now after just having the catalytic converter and exhaust manifold replaced less than a week ago !!

Okay, had some time today to test a couple of things....Could you let me know if this is leaning more towards one than the other in regards to a thermostat or radiator.
I started the car and let it idle for quite a while - 10 - 15 min. and the temp gauge stayed at half way or just below. Then I drove it at various speeds continuously between 30-40 mph and then 60+ mph for extended periods and here's the thing that seemed consistent....with the AC off it would run between half way and just over half on the temp gauges (ocassionly just below half), but when I turn the AC on it would run between 2/3 to 3/4 toward "H" on the temp gauge and as soon as I turn the AC off it goes back down to half way or just above. So, is it still a crap shoot between the two or does this description lean more towards one direction than another?
By the way, are you very active in Hamming and what is your preferred medium and/or frequency range of choice???

My first guess about the heating up problem is the radiator. It seems that it cannot handle the extra strain of the A/C system adding the heat. I would try the thermostat first as it is much cheaper to try. i would recommend replacing it anyways. Here are some pics of the thermostat replacement as well of replacing the radiator(if needed).

I like to talk to a few local guys around here in VHF at 147.280. All the guys in my area have technician licenses, so that is all they are allowed right now. I do enjoy from time to time playing on HF on every band when its open and doing contests. I have not had as much time lately as I have been trying to get my house painted! *yuck*
