Default 2003 Protege Head?

Long story short a young man I care dearly for is in the military stationed in Germany with a new baby being shipped back to Afghanistan again tore his car up a 2003 Protege 2.0 with a turbo right before he left.Needless to say he"s gonna be oversea"s for another 2years and paying 500 a month on this car and can't afford to fix it so I am gonna do it for him.Bottom of the motor appears to be fine but head is not repairable.Cam journal .40 out so I'm on the hunt for another complete head including cams.I've looked extensively and found several but they are big money. If anybody has any suggestions please feel free I'm kinda stumped at this point.

If they are trying to stiff you because it is a turbo head, don't let them. All of the protege 2.0 heads are identical, cams and all. You should be able to get a head for a couple hundred bucks from the salvage yard. A trick that I use is to ask for the head stripped. No cams, valves, etc. Most yards won't take a head apart just to sell it for less money. They will just discount the complete head. Take that to the machine shop and get them to inspect it and clean up the troubled areas. Even in the worst of shape, you should be able to get a head and rebuild it for well under a grand.
