Default 1990 323 protege head gasket job?

eHello all,
I have a 1990 323 protege with the 1.8L engin and unfortunatley I believe I have blown the head gaskit. I would like to do a head gaskit job my self (thats if the head is not warped). I am looking for as much information as possible... timming?? procedures???
Second of all I guess I would like to know why the head gaskit went. So if any one has input in that area thats cool too!
Here are the specifics of what happened:
I had been driving it all last winter and it would always heat up when I climbed a hill or worked the motor hard... almost up to the "H". SO in this spring I replaced the temperature coolant sendor in hopes that it would help. It is constantly loosing coolant and the temp. sens. didnt really help. It was on the highway about 2 hours out of town last week and the temp went past the "H" and "bang" the rad nozzle that the cap is screwed on to blew off and the car stopped. So I checked the cap but it looks like it was releasing the preassure ok?? What could it have been?? water pump?? thermostat?? I know the fan was coming on so it was working...
