comes on when low fuel light comes on ,after you add gas to tank.It sometimes may take a key cycle or two to get it to come on. runs fine the whole time

Would have to read the trouble code to be sure, but if you also notice some erratic or low Idle (looks like misfiring also), I would suspect your EGR valve might need a cleaning or replacement. I cleaned mine a couple weeks ago because I also had some troubles with idle mainly on low fuel or low grade fuel. I was reading a random misfiring trouble code and found a post on this forum about the EGR valve. It seems to be a common problem with the protege5.

That said,my first step would be to etheir buy an OBDII reader (basic models start at around 80$) or get a mechanics to read you the code.

 

water in gas indeed I have an 02 protege5 had same issue

 

do you put the key back in before you finish pumping? if the ignition is turned on when the cap is off, it will trip the CEL for a few key cycles.
