timing belt..

Hello: I am new to this very good forum,, I just bought a 1996 Millenia with 74000 miles..I really like the car, it runs very well, My question is if the timing belt fails will the engine be damaged??.. eg--valves and or pistons.. Thanks in advance......Stu
