Default need some help

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I have a 97 mazda millennia 2.5L and recently I was on my way home from work I was at a stop light and my dash lights and head lights flickered and the engine surged for a sec. When I stopped at a drive trough it did it again. But then fronted started to shake and the check engine light started flickering and I smelt burnt rubber. Any ideas of what it is?

I had a problem kinda like this...no rubber smell but the lights and the dash did the same thing. I cleaned every single ground point on the car and cleaned the square white plug just about the tranny, and then cleaned the battery really well. I also put in another main relay and the problem went away. I may have had some thing different from your's but mine did a few of the same things

we dont have the 2.5, but it sounds like the accessory belt that drives your alternator may have bit the dust. if that aint it, then i would suspect it jumped time. when was the last time a timing belt job was done?
