Default Broken Hood Release Cable

I hve a 1998 Millenia that I have had for 7 years. I enjoy the car very much and plan to keep it as long as possible. The problem I have is that the hood cable has broken and I am not able to open the hood. Is there some type of latch that can be activated to open it? Has anyone else had this problem. I don't want to take it to the dealer if I can help it.

Regards, Al

You are probably going to need to remove the front grill in order to get enough access to release the latches manually. Do not think there are any screws holding the grill in but only 4 plastic locking clips as in the first drawing below. Perhaps someone else that actually has a Millenia can confirm this so you do not end up destroying the grill trying to remove it. Will also include the diagram of the cable and latches so you know where they are.

if you have never removed the grill before, it will be difficult to see where the clips are. i take the grills off every time i wash the car, so i know where they are. the two lower ones will be really hard to see, unless you know about where to look. they all have a little tab, the top 2 you pry the tab up, the lower 2 you push them down. i just went out and looked with the hood closed, and it took me a bit to find them. they are accessible thru the grill.

Thanks for the information. My next task is to find a new cable. I probably should be able to order one from a dealer. I am glad I found this forum. It has much information. I am really glad I joined.

Will also need to determine if it is the front or rear cable that is broken. Cable release is a two part assembly that joins right near the air cleaner housing. The rear cable or one that goes under the dash board is OE part #T001-56-720D w/ MSRP of $24. Front cable that attaches to the latches is OE part #T001-56-72XC w/ MSRP of $36.20. "0" in part numbers is the number zero and not the letter. You can also order online for a bit of a savings at www.onlinemazdaparts.com. Just enter those part numbers in the "Search by Factory Part Number" box.

p.s. We are glad you joined up too Al. Always good to have another opinion or input around here.

It's possibly the rear cable. I un-hooked it from the release lever and gently pulled about 4-5 inchs of cable into the car. I will post what I find. Didn't even consider that there might be two cables!

Thanks again to all. I was able to remove the Grill and open the hood without any problems. The rear cable that goes to the inside of the car was broken. It has been ordered.

Default Broken hood release cable

Hi
I'm new to the forum and have a couple of questions on the thread.

Are the pictures referred to still available ?

Do the instructions about removing the grill apply equally to all years of the Millenia? I have 2001.

The hood is closed and the cable is broken.

Thank you for any assistance.
