Default 96 milly s fuel filter change

I'm going to try to access/change my fuel filter on 96 Milly S. Is the filter under pressure? Do I have to disconnect the battery or do anything else before changing the filter?

yes, the filter is under pressure. you dont need to disconnect the battery. the book says to run the car, then pull the fuel pump relay and let it die. from past experiences, there is no way to avoid fuel splashing/leaking when the lines are disconnected. i just use some rags to catch the excess fuel, and have lots of ventilation. the fuel tank is recessed where the filter goes, so liquid will collect there, plus all kinds of garbage. i pull the vertical trim panel back there, and go in from the ski door, sitting on the back seat. depending on the condition of your car, there is one bolt that may be rusted. if so, the filter will be a real pain to get off. at best, you will have to contort a lot, and getting the spring clamps off the filter can be a chore.

Thanks for the fast reply and help. Where is the fuel pump relay located? Also, I have the rear seat bench but there is no opening to the trunk area (there is a wooden panel in place). Do you think I could access the filter OK from the trunk?

pull down the armrest. there is a door there into the trunk, this is the ski door. you CAN get to it from the trunk, but you will be very unconfortable. the fuel pump relay is in the engine bay, right next to the cruise control actuator, driver side.

you wont like the answer. which is, you gotta drop the tank. have you priced a new fuel pump lately? and, if you are just going to get aftermarket, where you solder in just the pump, be aware that if it dont work, you will have to drop the tank again. also, some aftermarket pumps will kill the fuel pressure regulator, in which case you get to drop the tank again, PLUS buy the real pump.
