test of oxygen sensor on 99 miata

I have a 99 miata that check engine light came on. The OBDII code said the catalytic converter was not functioning correctly. There is a sensor between the catalytic converter and the muffler (all stock components). Is there a way to check this sensor w/o going to the dealer??
