Default PRHT Warning Beeping Will Not Stop

I have a 2010 Miata with the PRHT. The warning beeps continuously, and the "top down" red light flashes also whenever the car is in drive. This just started suddenly. Its as if the top is not latched or the deck is not down. Happens whether the top is up or down. I took it to the dealer and spent $400 and all they told me was that maybe the mechanism is worn and it will cost about $8,000 to have a new one installed. It seems like it probably has to do with the limit switches. Since it happens with top up or down, it seems like it probably has to do with the deck -- maybe there is a deck down limit switch? I found two switches on the passenger side, but adjusting them has not altered anything. Has anyone else had this problem, and what did you do to fix it? Its very annoying to drive with the constant beeping. Thank you.

I have the same issue with my 2011 Miata PRHT. I am new to the forum but I do not see any replies to your post.. Am I missing something or did no one actually suggest a solution?

No one suggested a solution. So I pulled the mechanism all apart, and found that by slightly bending the arms on the limit switches everything works as it should. When the dealer looked at it they estimated it at over $5K to replac e the whole top mechanism, saying the gears were worn. It was a complete misdiagnosis. Just the limit switches needed adjustment. I would like to buy a new set of limit switches from the dealer, just to have on hand if the problem recurs, but I have not been able to get correct part numbers. If you need some advice before you pull yours all apart, let me know and I'll tell you what I did. The main thing is to make sure you keep the shims organized when you take the deck lid off. Otherwise your gaps (height of deck above body when deck is closed) will not be good when you put it back together. Thanks for your reply.

Hello,
The two limit switches are located on the right deck lid motor assembly only. They are on the inside (toward the center of the car) of the large black gear driven by the motor. You won't see them at all unless you have removed the deck. In order to remove the limit switches you've got to adjust the mechanism so you can get a philips screwdriver through the holes in the gear to loosen the mounting screws. I ended up disassembling the unit in order to get them both out. There are two pins on the backside of the big black gear that engage the spreing-steel arms on the limit swithces. If the arms are bent or misaligned, the switch won't activate and the beeping continues. Here's the better fix, in my opinion, and I've just done this and my top now works just like new. I bought a whole right decklid motor assembly from a partseller on Ebay. Paid about $95. Easy to get in and out (once you take the decklid off) and the switches come with it. There is a motor currently on Ebay. Here is the link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/17576942166...AABOJZL0ewujPg. This guy is a good seller. These don't come up for sale all the time, so I'd get it if I were you. I will probably buy another one in the future just so I have it on hand. This solves the switch problem and anygear-slippage or stripping that may have occured because the switches weren't operating properly. If you've heard any kind of grinding or popping sounds as your deck is lowering down, its likely that the pinion is slipping in the gear, and you're going to need to replace it. Get one of these. I will post some pictures but they are not real good ones. This is my old one. First picture is of the whole unit (retracted configuration). This is what you get on Ebay. The switches are on the back side of the black gear. Notice the black and white electrical wires coming out the top. Second picture is looking edge-on at the big black gear. You can see the two spring-steel arms of the limit swiches and the black pins that engage them. You can't see the switches because they are behind the arms. The third picture is of the second electrical plug on the unit, which services the limit switches. The right-side motor assembly has two electrical plugs, one for the motor and one for the switches. The left-side unit has only one, for the motor. Hope this helps, and good luck.

Thank You for your March update on the issue of beeping from PHRT warning beeping. Your March post was very helpful and I order the part you suggested from the eBay seller you suggested. Just ordered today.
I am sure I will have additional questions when I begin the repair.
