Default Key with Chip

I'm sure this has been asked before, but here goes. I just bought an `01 with only 1 key. The dealer wants $130 to program a second key. Is there any other place to get a key or is there a way to disengage the lock-out? Thanks.

Default RE: Key with Chip

Unfortunately not. Not to irritate you, but while they charge likely an hour of labor for programming, it only takes a few minutes. I'm not sure on the older ones yet, but at least on newer ones, we plug our scanner into the OBD II connector and obtain one security code. Then we go onto an internal Mazda website, put in that code and some other information, and obtain another security code to type into the scanner. You'd have to pull a hell of a stunt to eliminate the need to have a key programmed to the car. That involves the ECU, the ignition switch, as well as at least one or two other modules if I'm not mistaken. The great thing is that it makes the car harder to steal. The bummer is that it's expensive to get replacement or additional keys. Sorry bud.

Default replacement Key

I was able to get a replacement key from remoteoverstaock on ebay. it came quickly and was $60.00 compared to $218.00 the dealer wanted. then i found a locksmith from a used car dealer that specialized in reprogramming and cutting replacement keys.
