I just found out that My 2012 CX9 has the bad transfer case. It's out of warranty, even the extended TC warranty. My local shop will replace the tc if it's not too involved. How difficult is it?

 

It's not too hard, however, quite often the spline drive between the transmission & transfer case (PTO) wears & requires a trans rebuild or replacement.

 

I had a TC go out on me on my 2012 CX-9 due to wear and tear from towing under load. I didn''t exceed the load capacity, but with these transfer casings going bad already, it certainly did not help. Decided to have the transmission exchanged out with rebuilt tranny from mazda factory, with new TC, but now the shifting is off. When I drive it in manual mode, of course there is not a problem. Only when I let the car's computing decide where the shift point should be. Anyone experience this? My repair shop was NOT a dealer, but a local repair shop that has been working only on mazda since the 70's.

Does the Power Train Computer need to be reflashed?

 

Anytime you replace the transmission the TCM requires resetting & reprogramming.

 

Is that a service that can only be done by the dealer?

 

I'm not sure. There maybe scan tools that Mazda may of licenced the software to.
