Default Can't start the engine with auxiliary key on 2nd gen CX-9

With the 1st gen. I can unlock the doors without triggering the alarm and start the car with the auxiliary key only. That was a life saver in situations similar to: If dropping my wife at the mall and I need the car for an hour or so, l keep the key fob without the auxiliary key, that my wife can keep the auxiliary key, and after I finish my drive, I can leave the car at the mall parking and go without the trouble of finding my wife to give her the key. After she finishes her shopping she can unlock the car using the auxiliary key and drive. I just text her the parking number. Very good solution for unplanned trips when you don't carry the spare key fob or if you have only one key.
with the 2nd generation, I just found out if I unlock with the auxiliary key, the alarm went off and I can't start with the auxiliary key only, I will need the key fob to start the engine. This is a bad design from mazda.
With the 1st gen key, the transponder was in the auxiliary key.
With the 2nd gen the transponder is in the key fob shell. Is this true or I'm doing something wrong?
