Default Bushing noise

As my user name suggests, this is for my wife's 2010 CX-9 grand touring. Recently she's had some clunking when hitting certain bumps, etc and when braking. I couldn't find anything visible so we took it to a shop, I'm much more familiar with VAG cars though I have done some work on the CX-9. The shop said the believed it to be an engine cradle (sub frame) bushing, but they couldn't get to it. Is this a common failure item on the CX-9 and is it a doable job by a home mechanic that has a good set of tools. I've pulled the sub-frame on my 2002 GTI VR6 a number of times before I sold it and have done a few other sub frame jobs, of course we'd have it aligned after but if I can save some $ replacing the bushing first, that would be super. Thank you in advance for any advice, help or otherwise.
