CX7 2010 Luxury Sports - supposed turbo failure
Hi All,
I have a CX7 Luxury Sports 2010 2.3L Petrol. This is my wife's car.
2 weeks ago she was driving home, she had made the trip the previous day and was now returning home.
About half way the engine shut off without warning, ignition lights came on and she couldn't restart it.
Family members arrived to her, who have more knowledge on cars than I do.
Battery was supposedly ok. Fuel Pump seemed to be working. Spark plugs seemed dry though.
Over the weekend they had a look at it some more. Car would sometimes start but then then fade away and shut off.
It got taken to a mechanic who have taken their time in getting me the report.
They have said that the car arrived and was blowing white/grey smoke. At no time before it went to them was it blowing any smoke!!!
This have said the turbo has failed and this has also caused the catalytic convertor to be blocked.
Fuel was also tested for contamination but this has come back ok.
Repair cost, at least by them, is very costly and I am considering taking for a second opinion but also of the thought that it may not be worth repairing it at all.
They have quoted $1700 for turbo and $3600 for convertor (plus other things like gaskets, oil, coolant, etc - this is in AUD$)
Can anyone comment on this? Does it seem right to you what they have said? Is this sort of they common on CX7's?
Can the turbo failing cause the catalytic convertor to become blocked and fail also?

The turbo reintroduces exhaust back into the system when it fails the engine looses all sorts of power but may still run. the catalytic converter is a honeycomb ceramic block inside a metal housing when it is clogged the engine cannot breath and will not run. these could be two separate problems. a failed turbo should not effect the catalytic convertor that way. It may be possible the head gasket failed and fluids escaped into the exhaust system and clogged the catalytic converter. thus the white and grey smoke as fluids are burned off. Parts and labor vary quite a bit for this repair so look around. remember its always worth paying someone who knows what they are doing and that is not always the dealer.
