Default CX-7 cranks but doesn’t start

Hi everyone

Strange problem with wife 2010 Mazda CX-7. It’s the grand touring turbo 2.3 with 115K miles. Once in every few starts it will just crank and crank and never fire. Let off for a second, crank again and then it will fire. Sometimes you have to do that a few times. No codes, not even pending ones.

I read some things saying the EGR tube could be clogged so I took it all apart just to find that it was fine, just a little dirty. Then I’m like, maybe fuel filter clogged? But it sounds like that is in the tank?!?

Then I started thinking camshaft position sensor?

any thoughts? I’m at a loss

Dave

On another vehicle I was getting excessive cranking on start up - it turned out to be a failing MAF sensor. It was only subtly out of spec, but enough to cause trouble - went with OEM.

Thanks! I will look into it. Any idea on what would be a normal reading?

Each vehicle is different. I tried MAF sensor cleaner first, but that did not make any difference. I tried changing PCV too, but old one was good.
