Well add wifes '17 CX-5 to the "uncommon" rear differential failure list!
Those pictures indicate a lack of common sense. If you had been rinsing your undercarriage more often as you seem to know your area and the road conditions and that they are likely chemical treated then your example is the normal for a lack of preventive maintenance. Nothing more!!!
I would not brag about that on a forum... rolmao
BTW if I have not posted it... I live at the bottom the California/Neveda Serria mountains. I frequent driving to Neveda in all season that include winter months with snow and muddy roads. Even a few places that we take the Ford explorer that is dirt/muddy roads. I think there is even a picture or 2 of my Mazda 3 so dirty from a trip to Reno that the paint looks brown. I know there are several drive pictures in the snow and rain in Ca and Oregon in it. I rinse the undercarriage often and also posted pictures of doing so. In the service shop we get customers from both Ca and NEV and travel during winter months and snow like we are having currently and your differential is one of the worst I have seen . But I would love to see the degraded condition of the rest of your undercarriage system and parts.
Dude you really need to take a few minutes every now and again and with a ordinary garden hose rinse off your undercarriage.
You are like trying to help someone that really thinks they know the answer to the questions they are asking and has all the answers. LOL
I will give you that you are entertaining.

When any member claims to be in any aspect of the auto service industry it is either before OBDII and CAN bus (pre 1995) or they have no real training in a service institution and no credentials except maybe a tool box of dirty tools for proof of experience servicing vehicles. But hey I question what we would call "old school mechanic", most in my lifetime had no clue how to actually service and dial-in a point distributor. rolmao. However you are absolutely correct about one aspect of *ownership of vehicles.... Oh I do some kind of included service to at least 100-200 different vehicles each month.
You should know you are now included on the w.w.w. for the information (not empirical) about the differential part on a Mazda . So when some poor human looks up this subject your response will pop up. Hopefully that person will read all the responses and do a little fact finding and not take your info as fact based as a common ocurance. .
Here in Maine with all the winter road salt and ice melting chemicals I use the touchless car wash with undercarriage spray.
My home outside hose is off as it would freeze so I need to use the car wash.
Minimum of every two weeks but often weekly depending on how much driving I have to do in nasty road conditions.
It's $11 for the automated low-end wash that includes the undercarriage spray, or you can use the self-wash bays.
At my age even if I could get down with the power washer hose I couldn't get back up so I use the auto-mated drive thru.
My CX-5 undercarriage looks fine because I do this and is well worth the extra $200 or so a year.
What minimal rust is there is because I also live about 200 yards from the Atlantic Ocean.
The air here is often full of sea salt (fog and spray) and roads often covered in salt from lobster bait and seafood transportation.
