Default Rust in rear control arms

How bad is this ? This is a 2017 CX5. Can I scrub this with a wire brush and spray some rust stopper ?

I don’t see any real concern and for the most part for an average owner normal in some areas of operating a vehicle. Like Bozeman .The important area which is the bushing is where if any concern should be checked. But not really a cause from surface rust.

Applying any sort of rust remover and definitely not a wire brush should not be used. At best spraying simple green and good soapy washing is better than any other service .

FYI for you and others this is why frequent garden hose washing is a service that would have reduced much of surface rust coverage . And especially if adverse weather operating conditions . Snow and rain are the worst and treated roads in winter.

If you are still concerned have the chassis and suspension inspected and check for bushing or other wear.

Thanks for the reply. I usually do a couple of undercarriage washing once in a while in the Winter. And yes that definitely helps.

Can I ask why you don’t recommend any rust remover or a wire brush? Will it make things worse? I was thinking something like STABIL - Rust Stopper.

You have multiple materials used in the area and subjecting them with and chemicals could damage them . Unless there is damage from the rust which I can’t see in the picture it is more *cosmetic . *And I totally understand that .

Unless STABIL states in a email to you that it is safe to use on vehicle suspension components it was as far as I am aware not formulated for that purpose?

It’s like WD- 40 in a since that many think it is a lubricant first but it’s actually a solvent.

As for wire brush I mentioned why not to use it already. Maybe if you must then use a nylon brush and simple green. At least you won’t take the chances to damage some parts .

Make sense. At least I know this is not too bad but have to keep an eye on it. Thanks again for the help.

Looks really good for the age. Like @Callisto said, the bigger concern would be things like the bushings and other parts that are rubber.

Like others answered it looks to be basically a cosmetic issue.
A pressure washer works well and will take the majority of that right off with no brushing.
