Default Rough Idle

Hi all. A couple of winters ago I got stuck in the snow close to home. I was getting assistance getting pushed up a hill but stupid me kept my foot on the gas full throttle. After a couple of days of not using the vehichle, when I got in and pushed to start the car revved all the way up to 8k on it's own. It did that for weeks. Lo and behold, the day I was going to take it to a Mazda it stopped. Like out of the blue. Every now and again, if I make a quick acceleration to beat a light or get around another vehicle, the same pushback comes back. I turn the car on and it revs to 8k. It will idle around 1.5. I'm pretty sure it computer related. Does anyone know how I can reset this without having to go get ripped off by the dealership. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

The easy thing to try is disconnecting the negative battery cable and keeping it disconnected overnight. There's also the alternative of removing both cables and touching them together for a few minutes. I use the overnight method, but try the faster first if you want to, because it might work just as well.

It is always helpful to state your exact year when asking help on forums.

BEFORE TOUCHING BOTH CABLES TOGETHER USEING A VOLT METER CONFIRM THAT THERE IS NO VOLTAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Disconnecting the battery for only a few minutes is all that is ever needed but overnight may make some feel better.

You may have a problem with your drive by wire or what you would call the throttle peddal. I highlky recomend if at all posible not to drive it and have it towed to the service shop. There has been instanses that the driveby wire can fail and in so cause the engine to acerate.
