Loud clunk and banging over bumps from front end.

I know this is an old thread, but it might be useful for someone...
For 18 months we went back and forward between multiple garages and the main Mazda dealer regarding some loud clunking that was occurring at the front of the car. This tended to occur when the body rolled, so over significant bumps / or sometimes when going around roundabouts. It started off being quite rare, but became more frequent during that time and all started when my partner accidently drove the CX-5 through a huge pothole.
Garages changed the shockers, coil springs, anti roll bar links, track rod ends, bearings in the top strut, even the drive shaft and every time the noise persisted... It turned out to be related to strut brace that runs between the two strut tops (apologies if my terminology is slightly off, I'm not a mechanic). It appeared to have moved somehow and needed loosening and re-tightening while the car was under load (i.e. on the ground and not while on a lift).
No more clunking finally! Just thought I'd share it in case anyone else has this and is banging their head against a brick wall!

My 06 Z4 has a common issue like this with the two strut tower braces. When you drove into a driveway or other change in elevation you would get a groan/creak at the center of the dashboard. A quick wrench to tighten the nuts would solve the issue.
Glad you found a solution.
