yes it is funny when you increase the engines power output the gas mileage goes up👍🤓 But then then generally with that increase in power also means “required “ 91+ octane gas or LPG augmentation.😉
Those numbers are suspect. 474 miles on a tank with the 2.5T vs 459 with the N/A 2.5? Not likely.

I will point out my personal experience with my N/A would back that up along with the tank mileage range meter on the dash.

My highest projected mileage was on very long open road driving -where i dont stop for hours - I suppose there arent many places left you can do this - but the southwest is one - ( this is when you look at your car and say ..i hope it dosent break down ! - nothing out there -nothing ) monuments valley -headed to grand canyon , moab or Santa Fe will tell you exactly what kind of max freeway mileage you can get -change the oil - air filter - check the tires - any cx5 should get you close to 500 miles/ tank ....if you can stay at 75 -once you go over 80 it drops to a level thats not worth going faster -

Takes me almost 5 hours to drive to our northern border with Canada here, nothing but trees, moose, deer and no law enforcement for 3/4 of it.
I'll never know about the milage as there is no way I've travelled that stretch without frequently hitting triple digits in or on any vehicle I've owned.
I really enjoy discussions about fuel brands and octane. Usually it is just a bunch of opinions and feelings but occasionally you get some valuable info and experiences from a group. I'll share my experience and observations.
I tend to use the stations several prefer - Shell and Chevron. I do occasionally also get Costco gas, despite another thread around here with a youtube video putting it on the bad list because of sediment stirring despite also being Top Tier licensed. That's mostly bull since all fuel is put through several stages of filter but that is not my point. I prefer Shell and Chevron and that is what I use 90% of the time.
The owner's manual for the North America CX-5 (2022-2025 are what I reference) does list 87 octane minimum for the 2.5L. No argument there. My problem with that is those manuals are written by marketing. They get very little if any review by engineers. Early on I used 87 (that is what the dealer fills with) as well. Around 5000 miles I tried Shell 93 for a few tanks. I felt the idle was a bit smoother and my own perception was it was more responsive in the mid gears at mid-2000-4000 RPMs. No dyno, no testing, just perception. Then I found buried in Mazda's public documents and interesting specification listing 91 Octane or greater listed as recommended in the Spec Deck PDF for all trims/engines (2022 sample, see page 8).
It really too bad that Mazda as well almost every auto manufacture won't make available the actual testing graph from the different octane values for production vehicles. At least for me it would save the trouble of having to debate with so many that use their professional BUTT DYNO and forgetting the 5 basic steps taught in elementary school of the Scientific method of problem solving.
