I switched to 5W-30 from 0W-20 and prefer it. I'm in a warm climate year round. Not sure if I'd try 10W-40 but the idea is interesting. Is that an older manual?
It really goes back to BRAIN washing" and information over load.
To much information and everyone is an expert.
You go to the track, professional perfromance engine builders and even mom and pop machine shop we will all tell you the same thing, keep your oil and filter changed regularly and use a motor oil that is for the operationg inviroment of the engine.
BTW aside from the abuse a DRAG RACING ENGINE has on the respirating assembly I would often run 10W30 or 10w40 so that if I needed to save a few tenths off my time would switch to a straight 10w sewing machine oil. I never spun or lost a bearing and never sized a piston . In motorcycle service Suzuki call for a synthetic multigrade oil. We would often get smokers on new engines. This was because the synthetic OVER PROTECTED the cylinder walls and cause a glaze to form. The unofficial way to cure "smokers" instead of warranty a new engine was switch to a Dinosaur oil and run the engine up to redline and hold it for a few miles. CURED no more smoking and noticeable power gains. We would draw straw who got to do the service. Red line on the larger Suzuki Engine was 160-180+mph.
One other point to HAMMAR into the small brains here ,unless you have a PERFECT air intake filtering system (not going to happen) then all those charts what the oil will do is mute anyway. I trust some of you can comprehend and understand that right? Oil does not filter dirty air. Think of how wet sand paper works LOL
There is no argument that in the microscopic analysis and examination of bearing and cylinder was some oil talked about in this thread will out perform all conventional oils in the PERFECT WORLD. You get my meaning?
And yes it is beating a dead horse because once again people will do what they think is correct regardless of the true answers because they read it on the internet.
Oh who am I kidding, I have no idea what he is saying.

Testing facilities are generally a completely controlled environment.

In the end it's always about money $$$$ . So lets start there . Mazda wants a bigger market share and more sales because it makes more money that way. And Mazda has to honor warranty claims . So If the engineers at Mazda spec 0W-20 synthetic oil with a specific spec they have done the research and ,they are doing it for a reason . They answer to the sales department and bean counters , because less engine failures and more happy satisficed customers = more sales = more money $$$$$$$$$$. Money make the world go around . Mazda is in business to make money. As Lobstah has stated ,this is a very dead decomposing horse and should be buried . It's your vehicle and you can use whatever weight oil you want.
