That's what I'd figure, but worth a try none the less. The cheapest fix would be to unplug the wire for touch screen behind the screen. It would require opening up the dash a little bit, but would save a lot of money.

Do not do this unless you have first read and understand the service replacement of the device and the securing parts. Otherwise it is a good chance a DIY will break something!

see a service guide if you feel froggy to do that service first.

Connected with the dealer yesterday and the class action extended warranty gets me a flash update (firmware, etc).

The reset worked temporarily so hopefully the flash update will solve the issue.
Good luck

Default Ghost Screen

It is called a Ghost Screen. I had same with Spider Web Screen as well. It is common and Mazda is aware. I called Mazda USA and they covered entire repairs.

What needs to be done to fix this? Software/firmware upgrade?
How much is typical?

Video of what it's doing (note, user is NOT making any adjustments while this is happening).
This is not the only thing happening, it's just the example my daughter videoed.
Changes without user input happen in all modes (music, settings, etc).

I have mentioned a few times this is a Known Issue and Mazda covered mine Out of Warranty. They entire Screen must be replaced. a few hundred dollars if out of pocket.

Our of Warranty... Did you contact Mazda USA or just your dealer?

Default Ghost Screen

Understand there's an Extended Warranty. Contact both.
