Good to know. The chief mechanic thinks it could've been an assembly issue that damaged the transmission. No one knows at this point.

Correct. Most likely, the engine and transmission are shipped in assembled from
Japan or other sub assembler plants.
As an aside, China has/had a reputation for making junk too.
BUT, Honda and Toro (and others) make small engines for lawn mowers and .
snowblower in China and they are quality products in any case. It depends on the
factory owners as the the quality of the product going out the door. If they demand
good quality the end purchaser gets the quality.
