Default using timming light!

Ijust got my belt on my 1988 929 and getting ready to put the timming light to it. My question is do i have to do any thing special before i time it with the light? Autozone said 15 degrees btdc. the tab has 10 and tdc and lines between them , is the little lines 1 degree? i'm new to this so any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks dave

Usually you have to disconnect the advance and computer wire from the distributor when setting the mechanical timing. If there are vacuum lines leading to the distributor, pull them off and plug the lines. If a single wire also connects to the distributor, disconnect that also. The wire is different from the spark pulse wire.

There should be a decal under the hood that gives the correct timing, don't go by what a parts store says.
