trunk lock failure (boot lock)

trunk lock failure (boot lock)
Mazda 626 1.8 petrol saloon...
My boot(trunk) lid would not open, by key or otherwise.
Climbing into the boot through the back seat (luckily not locked), i was able to remove the trim and open the lid.
The lock cylinder has a piece broken off - where the rod bears on it to open and the rod was just hanging loose - disconnected.
Question: Why is a quality car is the lock cylinder body so frail ..........
Does the complete thing need replacing ? Is it possible to recover the key cylinder , so that, at least, I do not have to have a different key ?
