surging motor
Hello,
I have a problem with my 323 Astina with the motor surging, and I wonder if anyone has any suggestions.
The car is a 1992 Mazda Hatch, BG. Manual. The car has done 260.000 but still runs well and is reliable, apart from the annoying surging.
This happens when the air con is switch on and is noticeable when I pull up at traffic lights. The rev counter then surges from 1000rpm to 1200. Back to 1000 then back up to 1200.
I've had the car serviced by people that specialize in Mazda but they have not been able to find the problem, A very experienced auto electrician also could not diagnose the problem, but suggested I start with the throttle and work through this as a process of elimination. I've since purchased a second hand throttle and fitted it, but the same problem is present. I have a spare motor ( low Km, just 60,000Km) and planned to use parts from that motor, however there is a different 'throttler position sensor", round not square as in my car, and they are not compatible. The one on my car has three pins an the one on the spare motor has 4. I've been told this motor was from an automatic vehicle. Not sure if this is correct.
A lot of information!
Any suggestions appreciated.

Interesting that you ask that.
The problem was only present when the air con was on, before I fitted the 'new' throttle. However, with the new throttle I noticed the surging present even with the air con off.
PS I fitted the new throttle only a few days ago so I am still waiting to get clearer picture of exactly whats happening and when it happens.
Not sure this helps much.

I have a clearer picture now of how the motor is running, and its definitely surging with the A/C on and also when this is off.
The surging happens intermittently, and I am unable to predict when it happens and under what conditions it happens.
I noticed an earlier post about this problem which suggested I have a close look at the air intake. When fitting the 'new' throttle, I noticed a split in the small hose that runs from the main body of the intake, across to what used to be called the rocker cover. I'll attempt to seal the split with tape and refit the small hose.
See if that makes any difference.
