Default Ignition timing reference points

Does anyone out there have hands on experience setting the ignition timing on the 323. I have a 1991 model which I cannot find or get to the mark on the pulley or the TDC reference points on the tab adjacent to the pulley. Does one have to remove one or both belts in order to get to these items??? I really am trying to get to them at this point in order to set the valve adjustment.(set the number one cylinder at TDC then proceed with the valve adustment, as I am getting considerable valve lash in the engine: it sounds like a diesel engine!!!)

I do not have experience with those year models but here is a page from the manual concerning valve adjustment on your 91. Just for information.
