Couple of problems with 323
Hi i'm a newbie and have just bought my first Mazda. A 95 323 glx 1.8 , the car is great but i have a couple of issues i hope someone may be able to help with.
Firstly is the clutch the bite seems really high almost as the pedal reaches the top, sometimes it slips. Does this suggest a new clutch or is there something else i can try. (Can select gears fine).
the only other thing is when i start it ittakes a few cranks to get it started, for the first minute or so it feels like it's going to cut out but then ticks over great. I will do a quick service plugs filter's etc, but just woundered if there was something particular to look at.
Sorry for such a long post.

Yes, it sounds like you will need a clutch soon. With a new clutch, you will need to push the pedal much closer to the floor to disengage the wheels from the engine. As the clutch wears, less pedal travel is required. But if it's not slipping (for example when you hit the gas while doing 30 mph in 3rd gear) there is no reason to change it now. It could go another 5000 miles. Once you notice it slipping, go easy on it, don't let the engine rev when it does slip (you can overheat and warp the flywheel), and get it replaced when you can. It's important at that point, but not an emergency.
I think you've got the right idea with the ignition problem, as well. Start with tune up stuff and see how that does. I'd replace spark plugs, fuel and air filters, and check ignition wires.
