Default Code 628-Excessive converter clutch slippage

Okay, I figured out my code, and the transmission shop told me that this means my transaxle is pretty much on the way out. However, he said that the flashing hold button had something to do with a feature that took some emphasis off of the converter and used some hydraulics to support it. The problem is that once I left the mechanic's shop, the flashing "hold" light turned off and the transaxle is no longer shifting hard (it's shifting easy again). I cannot turn the feature on again manually either. I have 3 questions associated with this.
1-is it actually better to have the "hold" light flashing so that the transaxle will be protected and last longer?
2-now that the light is off, is there any way to put it back on?
3-any chance that the light being gone means that there was no problem to begin with? (ha, there's a huge wish)

Again, this is with reference to a '94 626 2.0.

Thanks
