Default Catalytic converter question....

The check engine light came on. My mechanic says the converter is to blame, it is not getting hot enough.
His part source says $700-->800.00. I find them on ebay for $99---149.00.
The ads say, except California. How do I check this ??
The car is a 2000 LX 4cyl. with 118k miles.

Any other opinions ?

Thanks,
Mark

I think California has stricter emissions standards, and therefore California cars may need different catalytic converters. If you don't live in California you should be able to use one of the 100 - 150 dollar ebay one.
