Car does not accelerate

Car does not accelerate
Hi ,
I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
I have a 1999 Mazda 626,2.0L (4 cl) with manual transmission.
Lately when I press on the accelerator, the engine rpm's come up, but the car does not acclerate or does so at a snail's pace. I've noticed this has been something that has been developing gradually over the last 10 months, but has just gotten to the point that it is now very noticeable and is having an impact when drivingin traffic.
I have read some second hand on-line advice that ranges from theclutch is slipping to having a blocked air filter.
Can anyone please help me offer someadvise / insight on this problem that actually makes sense?
Regards,

RE: Car does not accelerate
Sure sounds like the clutch is slipping very badly bk21510. Does the engine rev normally in neutral? If it does then get rpms up to 2500, shift into 3rd gear and let off the clutch pedal very quickly while at a stop. If engine stalls then clutch is ok. If it does not then clutch is gone.

I second the clutch theory.
Open up your airbox and run it without a filter (around the block) to see if that has any effect. I doubt it will, but it would eliminate the filter as a possible cause.

Thanks for the advise. I will test it tonight. Based on your advise and dave87, I am begining to have a sinking feeling that this is going to cost more than just an air filter to repair.
Based on your experience here in the forum, is this a common occurance on a 8yr old car with only 125 klm (approx.). I've driven standard for 30 yrs and never had this experience before.

Babyhuey, I owe you a world of thanks.
Your advise was right on target. I brought the rpm's up to 3,000 and quickly released the clutch in 3rd and 4th. I'm sure no surprise to you, the engine didn't even blink!
So now I'm shopping for a repair shop for the job. Thanks again for your huge assist.
Best regards,
