Question 626 Low Idle Problem and Exhaust Fumes Hood...

I tried to run the car with the IAC discvonnected. It won't even start. Just cranks.

I plug the IAC back in , car runs. In the morning, when first started, it idles fine, close to 1,000 rpm. Once the car get's hot, idle drops very low, almost stalling.

I can see a little smoke coming from under the hood. Barley noticeable. It seems me that maybe my exhaust is loose under the hood and is causing this low idle problem. The engine temp stays at normal at all times.

Does this sound logical to any of you all?

All the best,
Kieran

There should be an idle speed adjustment screw close to the throttle body, have you tried adjusting it?

A second thing could be to check the timing.

Do not know if it is related but I would have tried to fix this. You do not want these fumes coming from your front. Exhaust manifold gasket is leaking? Try to remove the heat shield to check where it comes from. My bolts were very rusty and it was not all easy removing them...

This is often a sign of a clogged EGR system. The valve can be cleaned and scraped out, The EGR ports can be opened with a wire. The vacuum hose to the EGR boost sensor sits on a nipple behind the intake manifold. That nipple get clogged. Use a wire to open it. Look for vacuum leaks too.

You need to find out where exactly that "smoke" is coming from. It may be steam, not smoke.

My comments are in blue. I hope you can sort the problem out.
