Default 2000 626, 4 cyl, auto Hard start when warm

Recently,my 626sometimes does not start when warm. It would fire a few times, then nothing but cranking. This told me there was no fuel pressure. If you put your foot on the accelerator, it would then start but not stay running at idle.If you nursed it into gear, it was then perfectly normal again. Next day, it would not fail again.I tested all sensors and found no problems. No check engine light ever. I replaced Mass Airflow sensor, 2 weeks later it failed to start again. This time, I tried putting it in neutral, and it started. I put it back in park, it was fine. I decided to replace the EGR valve for a surging it has always had at 55-60 MPH, and I also removed and cleaned out the Throttle body. While I had all of this removed, I noticed the Gear shift cable retainer was missing at the transmission. This results in alot of slop at the shift linkage. The transmission is kind of halfway into any gear position. I replaced the missing piece, and so far it seems fine. Thinking back, I had washed the engine the day before the first time it didn't start. I remember finding half of a piece of what I now know was the retainer in the driveway after I washed it. The wiring diagrams would suggest this could not be the fix, but I am convinced it is...
