Default (1998) 626 - Will Mazda release transcoder password to car owner?

I bought a used 626 as a 'spare' car, something to drive when one of our others is in the shop. The car came with one key, the transcoder kind. My 9-year-old daughter thought the key looked like a fun toy, took it off the wall, played with it, and lost it. We can't find it anywhere. So we went to the trouble (and cost) of having a locksmith come out, break into our car, and create us a new key and program it. My wife put the new key in a 'safer' place so as to keep it from the 9-year-old. But now my wife can't find the key. She isn't sure if she ever really put it in the 'safer' place or not. Another key lost.

The locksmith at first didn't realize that we needed a key with a transcoder. So he had cut us a regular key, which he let us keep. That one we still have. So at least we can get in the car this time. Just can't start it. That means we have the key shape that could be duplicated onto a new key blank.

I know I can order new transcoder key blanks online; I could even pick one up from the dealer if I wanted to pay a little more. I know I would also need to pay someone else to cut the shape, but I'd like to avoid having to pay another service call charge to have somebody come out and program the key. That would be the biggest expense, and possibly unnecessary. From what I've come across online, the process seems fairly simple. However, I've only found complete instructions for adding a third (fourth, fifth, etc.) key when you already have two working keys. I've learned that creating a new first or second key requires a "password" and the instructions I've seen don't have the details on how to enter that password. Those are the parts I still need. Does Mazda give that information out to owners, or is it dealers and locksmiths only? How might I go about getting the rest of the info I need?

Thanks in advance

Take your car to the local locksmith, its cheaper than the stealer ship!!! The locksmith will need your key code (password) to program your new keys. I don't think the stealer ship will give you the key code, the dealer and locksmiths are the only ones who have the programming machines. I needed to have a key made and the dealer wanted $250, went to my locksmith and it cost me $75 for a key and programming
