Default ‘98 323 both tail lights not working

Hello good people of mazdaforum!

The wife refuses to let go of her 1998 Mazda 323, and insists I fix it for her, despite not being a mechanic, heh..

I’ve checked the bulbs, they’re fine. The fuse is fine. I checked for grounding faults with a multimeter, and assuming I did it correctly(used ohm sound thingy), grounding seems to be fine.

In my head I’m thinking it’s either a broken wire somewhere, or the relay is busted.
However, a garage told me they didn’t think there was a tail light relay in this car; can anyone confirm this?

Grateful for any tips or experiences shared. Thanks!

Edit: Forgot to include that I checked the voltage of the bulbsocket, and it measured around 1.1-1.3V - which led to the assumed issues above. And since both lights are malfunctioning at the same time, it leads me to believe that it’s either a relay or a broken wire before it splits out into the lights.

Are you talking running lights or brake lights?
