Cold Air Intake Bypass Valve Filter ...is this necessary?

Hi everybody,

im new here, and i just got an all stock 1999 Mazda Protege.

i want to change my stock air intake to a cone type air filter and stainless tube...

im still looking for a great brand. my question is, is this necessary to have when you have a cold air intake or ram intake? -

Not really sure on what you mean. I have a short ram/cold air intake with a cone filter on end with nothing else.
There are certain things you have to remember about these. An air filter exposed to the hot under the hood engine temps will make you lose power! This type of filter must be separated from direct engine bay heat and sealed up to bottom of hood. The pressure caused by the rad fan will blow very hot air all over the engine bay (so do what i did).
A cold air filter mounted down near ground is exposed to road conditions. If it's raining it will get wet and really wet when you go through puddles as the splash will go directly on to your filter unless you make a splashguard! Plus when you go through a car wash it will get wet. When it gets wet your engine may die due to maf getting wet. Minimum fix may be a new maf due to short circuiting of it of even worse water in the engine.
Really put my typing skills to the test on this one, whew, lol.
