Transmission or ???
Hello everyone:
I'm new at this, I'll try to make it fast. I have a 1988 Mazda B2200 Stick shift extended cab. I was driving down the road it was good, stopped at a few ( like 4 of them not far apart) everything ok. I went to the next red light a little further down the road, but this time when I went in 4th gear it was making the worst sound but still going. The only way I can describe the sound is it sounded like when you go on the side of the road and you hit the bumps (for like when people fall asleep). Anyways it kept doing that sound. I parked it just in case it wouldn't do further damage. So about three days later I moved it not far like moved it around to mow. Well It made one pop sound and now it will not go much of anything really, the sounds it constantly makes |I don't even want to start it. so the question or questions I have is do you think that it needs the transmission rebuilt? I need some help with ideas, please. Will other transmissions work? I guess I should have added that it has a motor in it I have never seen in anything before. Please and thank you in advance. I'm looking for some of my pictures so I can post them. I just wanted to get the question out for someone to read.

Welcome to the forum.
It helps to post the miles and any transmission service ever performed and what was it and when. Also has the fluid ever been changed. Look at the fluid even in a manual transmission can tell a lot about the condition.
Aside from very basic help it really is more the case that you need a shop (per4ferebaly one that specializes in transmission service, to look at it. I realize it is an expense for the towing. The only thought is your local craigs listing for a mobile mechanic? But as them if they have any training credentials. The ones that don't take offense to the question and you should pass using them.
We also have a senior member that is well versed in your model Mazda that may have alternative idea's on the issue and suggestions. So perhaps he may see your thread and chime in?

I have had a 1988 Cab Plus since 1994, and a couple of ,months ago my 5-speed transmission developed a clunking issue with its drive shaft at 230K miles. I diagnosed it, but was not able to do the repair myself, so I had a shop do it. So I'd check that first.
