I have a 1995 Mazda MX=3. It has recently been screeching when I start it. It goes away after a minute or so, and seems to last longer in colder weather. Sounds like metal on metal, and is really embarrassing. I have taken it to get looked at, but the sound doesn't occur because the car is warmed up and has been recently run....Common problem? Belt? Please help, I don't have money to pay for labor charges.

 

what your describing sounds like a common power steering or A/C belt screech. Very easy fix, just go to the parts store tell them what you have, IE Make, Model, Year, engine size, with A/C or Without A/C. you will need a 14mm socket, 12mm socket, 3/8 Ratchet.

 

So do you think I need to replace the belt, or just adjust it?

 

start with just adjusting it, unless the belts are cracked, if cracked then replace them.
