MX5 Electric windows
Hi all.
Had some graet help the other day from Babyhuey re: my headlights, thanks a lot.
Can any one help me with information or instruction guide on how to sort out electric windows that go down but won't come up. Checked all the runner guides and cables, all ok but motor won't seem to go into reverse except very rarely, does it need new motors or can brushes and springs be changed. Any general info would be appreciated

RE: MX5 Electric windows
Are you sure it is in the motor circuit and not the window switch?
Keep in mind how power window reversible motor operates. There are only two wires to the motor. To roll the window up, 12 volts is applied to one wire and the other motor wire is grounded. For the window to roll down the 12 volts and ground is simply reversed on the wires and motor turns in the oposite direction. If the window goes down then you know that the motor windings and brushes are ok and so it should also go up as it is using the same motor windings and brushes.
Up is usually the first to fail in a switch as it take more electrical current to overcome the weight of the window glass and gravity and the resulting increase causes more wear and arcing on the switch contacts.
Easy way to check if it is the motor or switch is to use a couple of wires hooked to battery positive and ground and directly operate the motor from the connector in the door panel.

RE: MX5 Electric windows
Most common repair we have is the window switch as well. Keep in mind a faulty passenger window could be caused by the drivers door switch (all circuits feed through there because of the lockout switch), switches are very expensive and non-returnable so make darn sure before jumping in.
