Default Mazda alarm

I've got a Mazda 626 from 99 with a standard out of the factory alarm. I have a problem is that when the boot is locked, the tail lights short. This goes away when the boot is unlocked. I traced this to what I assume is the alarm sense wire on the lock. If I disconnect this wire, the tail lights stay shorted, regardless of whether the boot is locked or unlocked. If I plug it back in again (with the boot open) the short goes away. I assume all you can do with a single sense wire is ground it? Which is what I assume happens when the boot is locked, which would open a path to ground for the 12V tail light wire. What I don't quite get is why it shorts when it's unplugged from the lock? Is there a flaw in my logic?
