I just bought a used 2000 Mazda Protege DX. the car is in great shape, but after only three days the Check Engine Light went on. The prior owner told me that this had happened before and that several mechanics had checked it and found no problem, but whenI had the car inspected it registered Error Code P0402. Can anyone tell me what this means and if it is a serious problem?

2000 Protege has had some problems with that code coming up even though the Exhaust Gas Recirculation system is functioning normally. No it is not serious at all. Will have no breakdowns, stranded, car won't start etc. Is just an emission related code and will not hurt anything. Few checks that can be done by yourself if you are interested to try them or can give some pointers to mechanic that you may take it to as it is often a situation that would not normally be expected to find. Let know if you have resolved the problem already or not.
